| A traditional punt is about 24 feet long and 3 feet wide (7.5 by 1 m). The sides are about 18 inches (0.5 m) deep. Both the bow and the stern are cut square, with a long shallow "swim"; this is to say that the underside of the boat slopes very gently at the front and the back. The seats are usually just a simple board fitting against blocks on the sides, with cushions. The gaps between the treads are normally fitted with gratings to allow the passengers to keep their feet dry. The punt pole or 'quant', to give its correct technical term, is normally made of spruce. The pole is about 12–16 feet long, weighing about 10 lb. The bottom of the pole is fitted with a metal "shoe" which is a rounded lump of metal to protect the end. copyright © Barking Boaters 2007
